Liebherr puts wind in the sails of power plant

A 1,200t Liebherr LTM 11200-9.1 telescopic boom has been used to install a wind power plant in Germany.
Crane company Karl Hartinger Kranbetrieb, based in Warburg-Rimbeck, used a nine-axis LTM 11200-9.1 to install a 3MW Enercon E-101 wind energy plant in Preussisch Oldendorf, in the north-west of Germany.

The heaviest part of the plant was the machine housing, which had to be mounted to a hub height of 99m, with the total load including lifting gear and hook block at 66.5t.

The telescopic boom with Y-pattern guying was extended to 82m, mounted with a 31.6m lattice jib. The LTM 11200-9.1 also features a 6.5m-long hydraulic luffing lattice jib, which was well-suited to the project.

Karl Hartinger crane operator Tjerk Thomiczek said: “The hydraulically luffable lattice jib is unbeatable on this crane, because I can set up the entire E-101 from a single position. I never have to reposition – that’s a huge advantage. Over the course of the installation, the extension was reduced from 19m to about 10m.”

Liebherr crawler reaches new heights

A Liebherr LTR 1220 telescopic crawler crane is operating at an altitude of almost 5,000m in the Peruvian Andes.

The 220t LTR 1220, which Liebherr claims is the first crane of this type in Latin America, has been working at the Antamina copper-zinc mine, Mining equipment specialist Joy Global Peru SAC has the crane on long term hire from crane owner Gruas Alquileres SA.

The unit has been working in difficult conditions, including extreme temperature fluctuations. Its main work is unloading the components of two electrical mining excavators and assembling them, The mine is one of the ten largest in the world, with 24/7 operations and around 430,000 tonnes of material extracted every day.

New Irish crane hire firm adds Liebherrs

Newly-formed Irish lifting services company BCS Crane Hire Ltd has added a 60t Liebherr LTM 1055-3.2 and a 200t LTM 1200-5.1 crane to its fleet.

BCS (Bill Cussen and Sons) recently set up operations in Limerick, Southern Ireland, following a management split at Cussen & Co Crane Hire which has seen the Cussen family pull out and set up on their own.

BCS said the addition of the cranes to its existing 90t LTM 1090-4.1 would help it to offer customers a comprehensive crane hire service.

Brian Lang, Liebherr Ireland sales manager, said: “The formation of a new crane hire company in Ireland provides evidence to the recovery in the economy and the steady return of growth.”

Six new Liebherrs for BKL

German crane rental company BKL Baukran Logistik has taken delivery of six Liebherr mobile cranes for its newly-opened site in Ingolstadt.

Three out of six new Liebherr cranes have already been delivered to Ingolstadt – a 60t LTM 1060-3.1, an LTC 1045-3.1 and an LTM 1130-5.1. The other three cranes – an LTM 1095-5.1, an LTM 1100-5.2 and an LTM 1200-5.1 – will be received before the end of 2014.

The cranes feature load capacities ranging from 45-200t, while the LTM 100-5.2 has the VarioBase support system, designed to enable safe crane operations with any support base.

The Ingolstadt site is BKL Baukran’s fourth German operation and gives the company a presence in the centre of Bavaria.

Liebherr LR 11000 works for the first time

Liebherr says the first operational use for its Liebherr LR 11000 1,000t crawler crane has completed its first lift at a Romanian oil refinery.

The LR 11000 was used by Felbermayr to work on a constricted site with a 35m by 35m working area at the Petrom refinery in Plojesti near Bucharest to lift giant steel cylinders, the largest of which measured 58m in length, weighing 335t and with a radius of 27.5m. The erection of the lattice boom and 36m luffing jib had to be completed in a narrow alley just 5m wide.

Liebherr said that the load handling was exciting as it was not possible to determine the exact weight of the column.

This was due to additional items being fitted to the largest tank. Only when the LR 11000 and an accompanying LR 1750 had fully lifted the load did they realise it was 55t overweight at 335t.

To overcome the slewing process over a high pipe bridge, the column had to be raised to a hook height of 80m, the radius reduced and the crane moved just a few metres. Without reducing the radius of the suspended ballast pallet by around two metres to 13.5m, the guying roads and ballast would not have cleared the pipes and pillars.

The LR 11000 will continue to work at the refinery until the end of July. Felbermayr has a fleet of around 70 cranes working at the site, which is being shut down for a general overhaul.

Liebherr LTMs in mammoth airport hangar tandem lift

The Felbermayr Group has used Liebherr LTM 1400-7.1 and LTM 1350-6.1 mobile cranes in a tandem lift of a 190t truss for a new Austrian airport hangar construction.

The lift of the 100m-long truss was part of a steel skeleton erection for a maintenance hangar for business jets at Schwechat Airport, Vienna.

Wels-based crane and heavy load contractor Felbermayr also used three smaller Liebherr mobile cranes for positioning and installing cross and connecting elements.

A total of 800t of steel was lifted to form the hangar structure.

Meanwhile, Felbermayr has been investing in its Eastern European operations with purchases of the Liebherr LR 11000 crawler crane with 1,000t lifting capacity and three large LR 1750 crawler cranes.

The LR 11000 is currently installing a 300t reactor at a refinery near Bucharest.
