New Grove fleet helps Peru copper mine expand

A new fleet of Grove rough-terrain cranes is helping one of Peru’s largest copper mines to triple its production output.

The Gove RT9130Es, RT880Es and RT765E-2s were assembled at Manitowoc’s factory in Passo Fundo, Brazil and supplied to Graña y Montero Holdings’ (GyM) copper and molybdenum mi ning complex in southern Peru.

The units are assisting the company with the US$4.6bn mine expansion project, which will enable GyM to expand output from 120,000t to 360,000 per day, providing additional annual production of 272,000t of copper and 7,700t of molybdenum by 2016.

GyM said it chose Grove rough-terrain cranes because their standard features were ideal for mining site use.

Gerardo Castillo, Manitowoc’s regional business manager for Peru and Argentina, said: “As long as commodities prices continue to be competitive and global demand remains stable, conditions will stay favourable in our region, which will only help grow crane sales.”

USITC judge upholds Manitowoc complaint against Sany

A USITC has issued a final initial determination in Manitowoc’s complaint against Sany, saying that the American crane manufacturer has shown certain products infringe its patents, and that they have shown misappropriation of trade secrets.

The case relates to the two companies’ competing floating counterweight systems. Manitowoc claims that Sany’s system used on its SCC8500 infringes on a patent, US 7,546,928, relating to a mobile lift crane with variable position counterweight. The system was implemented by Manitowoc on its Model 31000, and later on its MLC300 and MLC650 cranes launched at ConExpo.

The full decision has not yet been made public, but a notice promises it will within 30 days. The current notice explains that the administrative law judge has issued a final initial determination on whether there was a violation, and a recommended determination on the remedy that may be appropriate in the event that the USITC finds that there was a violation.

The administrative law judge’s determination is subject to appeal by the federal appeals court. USITC determinations do not result in money damages. Instead, complainants can make a parallel claim in a district court, which Manitowoc is doing in Wisconsin. That case will resume on 23 July.

Manitowoc and Link-Belt help students park

Two Manitowoc crawler cranes and a Link-Belt crawler have completed a 15-week lifting job on a new six-storey car park at Florida International University.

Crane Rental Corporation provided two 300t Manitowoc 2250 crawlers and a 200t Link-Belt HC-248H5 for the project, which involved lifting more than 2,600 prefabricated concrete components. The heaviest component was a 74,000-pound shear wall.

The Manitowoc cranes had 100ft of main boom and 100ft of luffing jib, while the Link-Belt worked with 200ft of main boom.

The 2,400 space car park, built by Solar Erectors, is the sixth at the university’s main campus and will help serve 54,000 students.

Daiya’s Grove RT550E gets to work in Singapore

Singapore-based Daiya Engineering & Construction Pte has set its first Grove RT550E rough terrain crane to work on a luxury villas development in the city. The 45t capacity crane with 39m boom was delivered to Daiya by Manitowoc local dealer JP Nelson.

Daiya specified the Grove RT550E as it needed a compact crane that could access the narrow roads and offer a good reach. It also said the crane’s fast set-up time ensured projects could progress on schedule when the units were being moved regularly and lifting irregular loads.

The crane is working on a six-month project building luxury residential homes on two sites in downtown Singapore, lifting sheet piling, steel bars, concrete and timber.

Manitowoc show Algerian ambition

Manitowoc has said it intends to use two Algerian trade shows, Batimatec and Algiers International Fair, to demonstrate its determination to expand and develop in country. The firm is showcasing a Potain self-erecting crane and Grove rough-terrain crane at the events with two of its local dealers, Sarl VIBA and Eurl MGP.

The manufacturer said that as well as its direct sales and support services, it would work closely with its dealers in Algeria who supply its full range of Potain tower cranes, Grove mobile cranes and Manitowoc crawler cranes. The dealers will also provide complete after-market services including technical assistance, assembly, handling and training.

Carlos Pimenta, Manitowoc area manager for Algeria, said: “Demand for our cranes in Algeria has steadily increased over the past few years and the country’s growing economy makes us very ambitious for this exciting market. We have operated in Algeria for many years and have built a strong dealer network and widespread support service. Now is our time to build on this foundation, and these two trade shows are an ideal way for us to showcase our capabilities and highlight our desire to grow.”
