Liebherr ships 22 cranes to Africa

South African port terminal operator Transnet Port Terminals has taken delivery of four Liebherr ship to shore cranes and 18 rubber tyred gantry cranes.

The 65 tonne ship to shore cranes offer an outreach of 65 metres, a span of 30.4 metres and a back reach of 19 metres. Designed to handle container vessels of up to 24 rows across, the cranes have a lift height of 41 metres.

The rubber tyred gantry cranes, destined for Tansnet’s terminal in Ngqura, have a one over five configuration and can stack up to seven containers wide. Features include Liebherr’s DGPS auto steering and container location recognition systems, ultrasonic anti-collision systems and an eight-rope reeving anti-sway system. Cameras will also be fitted to monitor the long travel in both directions.

In the last two years Liebherr has delivered nine mobile harbour cranes to Transnet Port Terminals. The ship to shore cranes in this order will bring the total number of Liebherr ship to shore cranes it operates to 31. Liebherr Africa will conclude the order with the assistance of Liebherr Container Cranes in Ireland.

Sao Paulo stadium collapse statement manufacturer Liebherr

Liebherr has this morning issued a statement on the incident at the end of November at the Itaquerao Stadium in São Paulo, in which a 1,350 tonne capacity LR 11350 crawler crane collapsed killing two site workers.

The statement says that all investigations conducted to date by Liebherr – including those at the accident site – have shown that the LR 11350 crane had no technical defects. It concludes that the ground was unsuitable and unable to carry the weight of the crane and the suspended load.

Because of this the crane sank and the excessive inclined angle caused a massive overloading of the crane and the complete collapse. Liebherr says that an independent, internationally acknowledged crane expert has also come to the same conclusions.

The company says the cause of the accident can be confirmed by subsequent static-load calculations and it assumes that all the reports currently being prepared about the accident will reach a similar conclusion. Analysis of the data logger by Liebherr has shown that it had not been recording data since November 2012 although it points out that the data logger cannot influence the crane functions.

In conclusion it says: “Liebherr is extremely saddened by this tragic accident and the two fatalities, and expresses its deep sympathy to their families. As the crane manufacturer Liebherr continues to do everything in its power to help bring the accident investigation to a speedy and logical conclusion and expects the parties directly involved in the accident to do the same. Liebherr will also continue to cooperate closely with the Brazilian authorities.”

Liebherr harbour cranes profitable in 2013

Crane manufacturer Liebherr said mobile harbour cranes played a significant role in the overall success of the Liebherr Maritime Cranes division in 2013.

Close to 80 mobile harbour cranes were delivered around the world in 2013, helping generate a turnover of EUR 280 million (US$ 378 million).

The 2013 figures were helped by a number of major orders for the 600 series in Latin America and the launch of the Liebherr Maritime Cranes simulator range, a company spokesperson said. In 2013 twelve units of the Liebherr type LHM 600 were sold in the Latin American market, including three barge slewing (LBS) cranes.

Other areas that helped the success was Liebherr’s LiSIM simulator-based crane driver training, a company spokesperson added. The maritime crane simulators are used to help improve port safety and productivity. Crane types that can be simulated include, mobile harbour cranes, ship to shore, rubber tyred gantry and offshore cranes. (See IC August 2013 issue page 45 for more information).

Liebherr has an order backlog worth EUR 150 million ($203 million), a figure it said is much higher than in 2012.

Heavy storm took down two tower cranes in Belgium

A heavy storm in northern Belgium on Saturday took down two tower cranes at the site of a new hospital in Oekene, Roselare.

The foundations/base of the cranes, which appear to be traditional Liebherr top slewers, look to have been the weak point with both going over fully intact. Four other similar cranes on site survived the storm intact.

The storm also severely damaged over 20 homes and a large tract of greenhouses. The foundations of the two cranes appear to have given way in the face of the storm.

Liebherr turnover forecast to hold steady

For the year 2013 Liebherr forecasts a group turnover of €9,086 million (US$ 12,539 million), equal to the 2012 figure. In the construction machinery and mining equipment segement the manufacturer anticipates a decrease of around 4 %. Turnover according to current forecasts will be around €5,620 million ($ 7,756 million, down €249 million ($ 344 million) on 2012. Included are the earthmoving, mobile cranes, tower cranes, concrete technology and mining divisions.

Growth to compensate will be from turnover in the maritime cranes, aerospace and transportation systems, machine tools and automation systems and domestic appliances divisions, together with miscellaneous products and services that include the components division business areas where turnover will reach €3,466 million ($ 4,783 million), an increase of €245 million ($ 338 million) or 8 %.

Liebherr estimates that the total workforce will increase by 1,870 in 2013, to a total of 39,670.

In outlook, Liebherr said it views the coming 2014 business year with restrained optimism. In its initial forecast for 2014 it expects total turnover to reach a volume similar to that achieved in the previous year and that the workforce will probably increase slightly.
