Liebherr acquires Hong Kong dealer

Liebherr Biberach has completed the acquisition of the Shriro tower crane division from the Shriro group in Hong Kong.

The deal is an asset based transaction and includes 24 tower cranes, with 20 sales and service staff, all of whom have transferred to the new Liebherr distribution operation. The business will report into Liebherr-Singapore which will now be responsible for the Liebherr tower crane business throughout Asia.

The Shriro Group has had close ties with Liebherr since 1978 when, under the name Peninsula Engineering & Equipment, it became the official Liebherr dealer for its tower cranes in Hong Kong and Macao. Liebherr will now run this sales and rental business itself, while Shriro will focus on its core business – international trade in consumer goods. No financial details of the transaction have been disclosed.

Dominique Tasch, managing director of Liebherr Biberach said: “The crane specialists are superbly trained and have already completed courses at our manufacturing plant in Biberach. That means that the transition will be very smooth and existing contracts and obligations will be met without any restrictions. The takeover will enable Liebherr to place a permanent footprint on the Asian market as a manufacturer.”

“We are particularly focussing on project business and special building sites. Liebherr can provide excellent services for complex special projects, using the expertise of its engineers from the ‘Tower Crane Solutions’ Business Unit. We work with the customer to find a safe, economical solution to technically complicated building projects.”

Liebherr opens maritime centre

Liebherr Africa has opened a new maritime crane sales and service centre in Durban, South Africa.

Located just outside of Durban, the new centre will offer sales, service and spare parts for all maritime products throughout southern Africa. As well as providing operator, technician and service staff training it will also feature maritime crane simulators for virtual training of ship to shore cranes, mobile harbour cranes, rubber tyre gantry cranes and offshore cranes.

The company said one of the main drivers for the new centre was a steady growth in demand, as well as its close cooperation with rail, port and pipeline company Transnet which operates more than 60 Liebherr cranes – 13 harbour cranes, 31 ship to shore container cranes and 18 rubber tyre gantry cranes.

Henner Rodenwoldt, Liebherr Africa Maritime Cranes divisional manager, said: “The investment in the new African maritime hub is very important for the maritime industry in southern Africa. Liebherr provides rescue sheets

Liebherr has started to provide rescue sheets for its mobile cranes in order to assist with crane recovery following an incident.

All Liebherr LTM and LTC cranes which comply with stage 3b or higher emissions will now come with a rescue sheet as standard. Available separately and located behind the driver’s seat, the rescue sheet provides detailed information about the structure of the crane and its cab as well as the best places to cut the bodywork open in order to free a trapped operator. It also provides information on the locations, volumes and hazard classes of the crane’s fuel and oil.

Rescue sheets have been available for new cars, commercial vehicles and trucks for some time now, although cranes are a niche product and relatively unknown to fire and emergency services. Liebherr said the aim of the rescue sheets is to enable the fast rescue of passengers and the safe recovery of the crane following an incident.
